Abstract:

Preliminary results of investigation of Neogene vertebrates from the Mokrá-Quarry site

The westernmost part of the Mokrá-Quarry is typical with occurrences of carstic phenomena including fossiliferous sediments within carstic fissures. Two fossiliferous carstic fissures (1/2001; 2/2003) have recently been discovered containing abundant Neogene fauna of terrestrial vertebrates: Chelotriton cf. paradoxus, Pelobates sp., Emydidae gen et sp. indet. (probably Chrysemys sp.), Testudinidae gen. et sp. indet. (probably Testudo sp.), unspecified Emydidae or Testudinidae, cf. Ophisaurus sp., Varanus sp., Lacerta sp. (small form), Boidae gen. et sp. indet. (large form), Bavarioboa cf. hermi, Coluber sp. l, Coluber sp. 2, Colubrinae gen. et sp. indet., Natrix sp., Elapidae gen. et sp. indet., Vipera sp. 1 (“Oriental vipers” group), Vipera sp. 2 (“European vipers” group), Mustelidae gen. et. sp. indet., Felidae gen. et sp. indet., Palaeochoerus cf. aurelianensis, Dorcatherium cf. guntianum, Dorcatherium sp., Arvieolidae gen. et sp. indet., ? Leporidae gen. et sp. indet. Recently diseovered remains ofboid snakes (Boidae) are of particular importance because of appearance of Bavarioboa cf. hermi which is a typical member of Early Miocene snake assemblages within the area of Central Europe.
