Plaňava Member from the Štramberk area (Lower Cretaceous, Outer Western Carpathians, Czech Republic)
The submitted contribution is an overview of lithological and paleontological investigations of Late Jurrasic and Cretaceous sediments at Kotouč quarry in Štrambek during years 2000–2011. A analysis of the almou black shale layers of Kotouč Formation in the Štramberk Limestone has been carried out. The dominant part of the studied outcrops consists of grey to black claystones with layers of grey limestones. These deposits belong to the Plaňava Member. Claystones and limestones were evaluated by macrofossils in the stratigraphical range from the Early Valanginian to the Early Hauterivian and by microfossils to the earliest Barremian. We expected that probably around the Hauterivian/Barremian blocks of older limestones and also sediments of the Plaňava Member were redeposited. Younger rocks represent green, green-grey and grey claystones in the conglomerates (equivalent of the Chlebovice Member) or fills in the Štramberk Limestone. Microfossil content document sedimentation in age interval from the Late Albian to the Late Cenomanian. We propose for set dark grey pelitic sediments with slumps bodies of limestones to use term Kotouč Formation. The stratigraphic range is Early Valanginian – Late Cenomanian. The Kotouč Formation is divided into two members: Plaňava Member (Early Valanginian – earliest Barremian) and provisional Homole Member (Late Albian – Late Cenomanian).
