Abstract:

Lower Badenian solitary corals suborder Caryophyllida (order Scleractinia) from locality Borač (southern part of the Carpathian Foredeep, Czech Republic)

Borač locality (southern part of the Carpathian foredeep in Moravia) is known for rich findings of coral fauna. Sediments typical of this area are the lower Badenian “Tegels”, which are also rich on variety of other marine micro- and macrofossils. Coral fauna studied in this work comes from the collection of the Department of Geological Sciences, Masaryk University, Brno and the Museum of Brno-region in Předklášteří. Nine species (subspecies) were determined of the suborder Caryophyllida Vaughan & Wells arranged in six genera: Caryophyllia (Acanthocyathus), Caryophyllia (Ceratocyathus) Paracyathus, Ceratotrochus, Trochocyathus and Flabellum. Presented species are typical for lower Badenian sediments of Central Paratethys, and some of them are known from the Mediterranean region and Eastern Paratethys. Determined taxa represent deep-water environment.
