Petrography and mineralogy of a soapstone body at the locality Smrčina near Sobotín (Hrubý Jeseník Mts.)

The Sobotín Massif of presumably Devonian age emerges in the NE part of the Bohemian Massif. It consists mainly of amphibolite, amphibole gneisses, subordinate green schists, metahornbledites, and only sporadic serpentinites. Small lens–like soapstone bodies are characteristic for the Sobotín Massif. One of the biggest soapstone bodies outcrops at the locality Smrčina near Sobotín (Storchberg near Zöptau in older literature). The soapstone body is concentrically zoned. Four main types of rocks can be distinguished in direction from the centre to the border: i) soapstone (talc + magnesite ± clinochlore ± tremolite); ii) talc schist (talc ± tremolite ± clinochlore ± magnesite); iii) tremolite schist (tremolite or tremolite/actinolite ± clinochlore ± talc); iv) chlorite schist (clinochlore ± tremolite or tremolite/actinolite). Fluorapatite, magnetite (often rich in chromium), ilmenite, zircon and rutile represent common accessories. Sometimes cummingtonite is present in tremolite schist. Formation of the soapstone body may have been caused by metasomatic alteration of peridotite during the Variscan regional metamorphism.
