Malachite speleothems in the Zbrašov aragonite caves, Hranice Karst

This study investigated composition of the speleothems in the Zbrašov aragonite caves that are part of the Hranice Karst. Hranice Karst is located SE from Olomouc city and is built in Paleozoic limestones (Givetian to Viséan). Two samples: one archival sample of malachite from depository and freshly sampled green speleothem from Jurik’s Dome were examined with XRD and electron microscope. In the archival sample malachite content is very low. Its genesis is explained as a secondary enrichment from surface. According to our measurements, malachite, chalcopyrite and pyrite are dominant minerals in the speleothem form Jurik’s Dome. Malachite origin is explained as a result of chalcopyrite alteration in the water environment enriched with carbon dioxide.
